Secularism at the citizenship interview: understand it and answer simply
Laïcité, the French principle of secularism, often comes up in preparation. It concerns freedom of conscience, state neutrality and living together. Explain it simply without oversimplifying it.
Last updated: 26 April 2026
A simple definition to remember
Laïcité means the state is neutral towards religions. It does not choose an official religion or favour a belief. Everyone is free to believe, not believe or change their beliefs.
This neutrality also protects equality. Public services should follow the same rules for everyone, whatever their religion, lack of religion, origin or opinions.
How to explain it at the interview
A simple answer is enough if it is accurate and understood.
Short answer
Daily life example
Dans la vie privée, chacun peut avoir ses convictions. Mais dans l'espace commun, il faut respecter les lois, les droits des autres et l'égalité entre les personnes.
A phrase to avoid
Do not say secularism bans religions. It protects freedom of conscience while separating religious matters from the state.
Limits to remember
Freedom of religion does not allow someone to reject the law, discriminate or force beliefs on others. Understanding this balance between personal freedom and shared rules matters.
Avoid aggressive or highly political replies. The interview is not an ideological debate. Show you understand the republican principle and can apply it to simple situations.
Simple situations for practice
- A public employee must treat all users neutrally.
- People may practise religion in private life while respecting the law.
- The same law applies to everyone, even when personal beliefs differ.
- State schools teach knowledge and respect pupils' freedom of conscience.
- Secularism also protects people without a religion.
Link secularism to your experience
If asked for a personal example, choose a calm situation: working with different colleagues, children's schooling, administrative tasks or neighbourhood life. Show respect for different beliefs and shared rules.
For example, you could discuss colleagues with different backgrounds and beliefs, respect for everyone and the law as a shared framework.

What should I avoid?
