Why work matters at the interview

Work is not the only measure of integration. It can show daily French use, relationships with colleagues, administrative independence, stable plans and contribution to society.

You may be asked about your job, start date, contract, sector, future plans or earlier work. Answer simply. This is not a job interview.

Explain your background in three steps

This also works if you are changing careers, looking for work, self-employed, studying or caring for family. Explain honestly without putting yourself down or inventing stability.

  • Before: training, earlier work or first experience.
  • Now: your current job, main tasks, schedule and team.
  • Next: a realistic work plan in France, even a modest one.

Adapt to your situation

Employee

Describe your role, time in the job, tasks and what you learnt about work in France: punctuality, rules, teamwork, customers or safety.

Self-employed

Explain your activity, clients, administration and organisation. Show you understand duties such as declarations, invoicing and taxes.

Looking for work

Mention applications, training, support and learning workplace French. You can explain unemployment calmly.

Training or career change

Explain why you chose the course, what it will allow you to do and how it fits your long-term plans in France.

Explain your contribution without exaggerating

You need not seem exceptional. Contributions can be working, following rules, paying contributions, helping a team, learning French, training a colleague or joining local economic life.

Avoid grand statements about being useful to France. Give a concrete explanation of independence, economic participation and stable plans.

Know the main periods and your current situation. You need not recite every date, but your answers should match your application.

Can I discuss a future career plan?

Yes, if realistic. Explain the steps: training, experience, qualifications, job search or growing an activity.

How can I describe a complicated job?

Use simple words: who you help, your tasks, colleagues and the rules you follow.
